The Lochness Monster

A presenter is tossed by Giant Haystacks also known as The Lochness Monster. The wrestler's tie is classic.

From:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Ruane

Martin Ruane, better known as Giant Haystacks (October 10, 1946 - November 29, 1998) was an English wrestler. Giant Haystacks wrestled in such places as England, the USA, Canada, India and Zimbabwe amongst many others. He was known for his huge size, weighing over 48 st (672 lb) at his heaviest.

After the decline of British Wrestling, he invested, unsuccessfully, in the motor trade for a few years and then managed with more success, a debt-collection agency.

Now, can you imagine this gentlemen coming to your door to collect a debt? I am not surprised that he did well in that business.

Ruane was a deeply religious man and refused to fight on Sundays. He reputedly ate 3 lb of bacon, 12 eggs every morning to maintain his strength, and flew all over the World. He died on November 29, 1998 at the age of 52, following a two year battle with cancer.

I am not a fan of wresting or bodybuilding, but I have a friend interested in both. I remember watching The Lochness Monster on television as a child and thinking that he was the largest human being I had ever seen. I remembered him and my friend had never heard of him. We looked him up on the web last night and had found out that he had passed away. I am not surprised he was a religious man as he came across as a basically nice guy when I watched him on television as a child, in my humble opinion of course.

Is there a theological lesson here? Even the mightiest fall. This is known of course, but how often is this general idea pondered seriously on? This man was almost 7 feet tall and more than 600 pounds, in fact my friend and I viewed a clip claiming at the time that Martin Ruane in his wrestler persona was 900 pounds. However, he looked grossly obese in that particular video. Cancer and death took down this giant, perhaps the largest human being I have even seen, and at relatively young age.

I think for an unbeliever a wise philosophical approach is to consider the seriousness of death, and if God exists what ramifications could result after death. Hebrews 9: 27 explains that each person dies and then after this is judgment. Scripture comes from a historically based tradition of God revealing his word to persons. Jesus Christ claimed he would rise again in John 2: 19-21, and is reported to have resurrected from the dead by followers in Scripture, many of whom gave their lives for the gospel message reasoning they had witnessed this resurrection; I would therefore, consider the Hebrews verse carefully. Yes, there is not empirical physical evidence for an immaterial God or for the existence of an immaterial human spirit, or for life after death, but there is documented evidence of historical persons throughout approximately 1500 years of Biblical history that experienced God's special revelation.

From:

Yes, I realize that there is some academic debate concerning the exactness of these dates, but I provide this for historical background. Christianity is a historically based religious faith and philosophy and not mythology.

My friend and I reason this is a doctored bodybuilder photo. He looks a little like the Michelin Man. Do my female readers dig him?

Hey ladies, look at me.;)

I should state that I consider non-medical use of steroids for the body as abuse of the body.

AMEN!!!

I've never heard of that wrestler before. Maybe his tie is normal-sized, but it just looks incredibly short on him??

When I was on the Wrestling team in High School, there was this one huge, tall guy that was somewhere between 300-400 lbs. (I don't remember now), and when I had to "attempt" to wrestle him, it was like trying to move a brick wall. I could do absolutely nothing against him. Even though I was very muscular, defined, and cut, and in top condition (I was working out heavily with weights and martial arts, as well as running, on a daily basis), I only weighed 155 lbs. at that time. Well, either that year or the next year (again, I don't remember...this was 31 years ago), that huge guy died---from a heart attack, if I remember correctly. He was powerful and strong, but none of that helped him against death.

That time line list, even if debatable, is quite helpful.

I tried twice to post a blog roll on my 'Puppet Head' blog site, including links to both of your blog sites, but for some reason, even though it shows that I have entered them in the 'Customize' area, the blog roll doesn't show up on the main page. I'll have to try again later. Also, I noticed that you have to be a paying member to be able to use HTML on that site.

CRAZY!! Is that a doctored photo of that guy or is he for real? Looks fake but you never know these days!

Btw I like the new profile pic

Hi Jeff.

The tie is probably normal size and looks funny in the clip.

I tried posting a third comment on your Puppet Head site, but could not get past the moderation code, as the blog would not accept the correct code from me.

I also noticed that the Puppet Head blog at times cuts some of the text off on the right side.

Thanks.

Hi David.

My friend has studied bodybuilding for over twenty years and he figures it is a fake, doctored photo. I agree and looking at the photo every part of his body seems enhanced.

Thanks, in the photo I have a professor look.

Nice pics to go with the original studio recording of Natural Science. As grateful as I am that Rush has decided to play this song live over the past decade, it's hard to beat the original with the flowing water sound effects. Recorded in 1978 and I'd say it's still ahead of its time in 2008. Maybe we'll see a resurgence in prog rock/fusion?

satire and theology said...

The original is better than the new live versions in my opinion because Rush has removed the synthesizer parts used in the original album recording. I suppose they became tired of pressing the foot pedals while playing their guitars live, which would be a difficult task as in playing two instruments simultaneously, like we saw the man do on Sunday.

Thanks, Chuckness Monster

Gahh...

That's disgusting! Talk about being muscle bound... There's no way that picture isn't edited. Some people have the genes to be able to grow larger muscles than others, but that guy looks unhealthy he's so big.

satire and theology said...

Thanks, Abbey.

I figure yours would be a typical female view, although on television I have seen attractive women with large bodybuilders, and as well, with weight lifters. I have seen weight lifters that have huge stomachs with attractive women by their side on television.

I agree the photo is edited. Abbey, I just found two other even worse photos that I will place in the article.

Russ,
In reference to the very last picture in the group, I don't think the guy to the far right will win. His thighs are clearly not built as proportionately than those of his competitors.

Yea, he is a freaky fake.

That site is a pain. I've only posted 3 times on it, and I can already see that it is inferior to blogger.com.

Every one of those bodybuilder pics is doctored, probably with Photoshop. I did something similar with a pic of myself, though mine is not anywhere near as grotesque as the ones you have posted. That second-to-the-last one (the 3rd one; the close-up) is particularly disgusting.

There are a couple of really gross stories that I have heard regarding overuse of steroids. One supposedly ended with the guy's leg bones shattering when he was doing squats, and the other with the guy's biceps exploding. There's supposed to be a video of the second one, but I do not want to even watch such a disgusting thing.

Although AH-nuld is the most famous bodybuilder of all time, IMO, the most perfectly-proportioned bodybuilder was Frank Zane (Example 1; Example 2). Second, IMO, would go to Steve Reeves, who played "Hercules" many years ago (Example 1; Example 2). Today, both of them would be considered comparably "small." But then, I think bodybuilders today are grotesquely big.

When I used to buy bodybuilder magazines (which was when I used to work out regularly), I saw a photo of a guy I had never seen before, who had one of the most perfect physiques I had ever seen. I thought to myself, "Wow! I wanna look like THAT guy!" But later, I found out he was homosexual, and I lost all respect. Up to that time, I didn't even know there WERE any homosexual bodybuilders. After that, I thought, "Well, at least in the martial arts, there are no homosexuals!" But then, I heard that this one guy in the UFC is supposed to be gay. Man, is there no safe refuge?

California has become the second state to legalize gay marriage, and it looks like New York may be next.

Many years ago, I was interviewed for the possible position of a prison chaplain. I was asked if I had a problem being around homosexuals. I was honest and told them "yes." Too many of them have sexually harassed me. One time, I politely but firmly asked a guy at the workplace to please stop flirting with me. He suddenly had a look of fear on his face, and humbly apologized, and he never spoke to me again. Other times, the person was not so obliging. Another time, a guy came up to me and grabbed my nipples. I told him that if he did that again, he was going to get hurt. Well, he apparently didn't believe me, so he did it again, and I round-housed him, and he went down (and as he was kneeling there on the ground in pain, he threatened to kill me). Most of the other times that I have been harassed, I just tried to ignore it. I have also been around a few gays who have been nice, and who have not been fresh at all (even though a couple of them have displayed deeply-rooted anger at the world). One time, I went on a gay website to try to witness to them, and I received such ferociously angry, hateful, bitter replies that I never tried that again. They get deeply offended and angry if you tell them that what they are doing is sinful.

They look like they had their heads plucked off of normal bodies and attached to some plastic torsos. The one guy in the middle looks like his head was attached to a Stretch Armstrong.

Agreed.

and the other with the guy's biceps exploding

I am sorry, that has made me laugh hard.

Man, is there no safe refuge?

Man, I laugh again.

It is legal in all of Canada.

Thanks, Jeff.

That is funny Chuck, and good points. To me the second bodybuilder looks like he been blown up like an inflatable mattress.

Thanks, Mr. Buff.

Your muscles are steroid free, but you do use Crisco for that special shine, just like the professionals.

Man Russ,
What happened here? The last I checked on your blog, it had not struck any "nerves". It seems that things have just 'exploded' all of the sudden!
The anonymous comment posted at 10:15pm apparently did not understand which guy we were discussing in the last photo on the page. We were discussing the very large guy with lopsided, unproportionate thighs. I said he would not have likely been the winner of that competition because he was unproportionately built. I was also kidding. I know the picture is doctored. Maybe this guy does not believe it.
I just want to ask the anonymous poster, Where have you ever seen anyone that large that you feel the need to defend him for not being fake?
Jim

satire and theology said...

Thanks, Jim.

Sometimes when I publish an article comments come quickly and sometimes not. I will add to and adjust articles at times to make them more interesting.

I will pass your question on to Bobby Buff.

The clip features the man with the exploding arm. The man stated that he often dropped the syringe on the floor and eventually ended up with an infection. He tried to operate on the arm/infection himself, but was unsuccessful and had to have surgery from a professional surgeon.

I saw this documentary years ago and some of the on-line comments concerning this gentlemen and this story are amusing. Please use Firefox if the clip cannot be viewed with Internet Explorer.

Hi Russ,

These are totally doctored picts...I know that...
I was not defending these pics.
I was being satirical as well as personal in the poem...
explaining my build "slim shiny and buff" as being real and accomplished by hard work and training unlike the fake ones that are on your blog which are so unreal they bring laughter and amusement which brings a nice flavour of satire to your blog.

Thanks,
Bobby B. Buff

That clip (video) is NASTY! That is DISGUSTING! That guy's arms are just nauseating. It looks like he has super-gigantic TUMORS growing out of his arms (maybe he needs to call Todd Bentley)! And the verbal description that accompanied the video, describing what happened....BLEECHH! I almost heaved just watching it! Even when it showed the guy with his shirt on, he looked like some freakazoid plastic doll of He-Man's super-monstrous, far-superior arch-enemy. When your bicep touches the palm of your hand on the same arm, and you can scratch the middle of your back with your tricep, then, man, there is something WRONG! His bicep was higher than his deltoid! I thought extreme women bodybuilders looked disgusting, but that guy takes the cake! When they showed him in handcuffs at the end of the clip, I think the charges they must have arrested him on were 'bicep homicide' and 'extreme, abusive behavior to your own arms.' After watching that clip, I may never touch another barbell again! Excuse me while I go take a Pepto Bismol for my upset stomach.

Thanks Jeff, you make sense.

Personally I find the steroid ladies more off-putting, but I also find anything other than tiny tattoos on women quite disturbing. Part of me wishes that some side effect associated with tattoos on women would arise in order than this gross trend would largely stop. God gives most women beautiful skin and then a few of them go a tarnish it was 'tats'.

Russ, I thought this up myself.
So, since your blog's title is Satire and Theology, this had to be copied and pasted from my blog to yours. Cheers.

"One of the best things I can think of for a travling minister/teacher is to know people around the world. Then you go to visit, have a church to go to, maybe a guest speaker gig, then a guided tour.
So, if you can ever come to Richmond, Virginia, you come prepared to speak and get a tour.
If I come to Canada, I'll be prepared to teach one of your classes "everything" I know about what ever it is you are teaching. Then, I'll allow your students to take us to lunch, as it would be their honor, of course. And, maybe you would not have to guide the tour. If lunch goes o.k., we'll allow your students to hang out with us! Sounds exciting. I can't wait.
I hope you were laughing and not cringing.
My name is James Leasure and I do not approve of this message!"

Can you imagine that guy in the bottom pic, far-right, in an airplane seat?

And, if that pic were real, I think he would give the Incredible Hulk a good challenge! Of course, if that pic were real, the guy would probably hardly be able to walk! And talk about chafing...

satire and theology said...

Yes, and many bodybuilders would love to be that big.:)

I'm not usually the type to get grossed out about things, but that video takes the cake... YUCK!

With so many body builders, I think they have the mind set that a little bit is good and more is better. When you're at the point that you can't even touch your shoulder, that's the best. I think these guys need to get a job and quit all the steroids stuff...

Just thought of this-I remember my swim teacher telling me that once in a while, he'll get these really big body builder guys that want lessons. They can hardly float because all their muscle is so heavy. They also can't play most instruments (if they would even want to), and a lot of everyday tasks are quite difficult. I don't know that it's all worth it.. The guy in the second to last picture wasn't doctored too well. He has muscles growing in directions that those muscles wouldn't even grow. lol

Thanks, Abbey.

Those are some interesting negatives associated with extreme bodybuilding. I appreciate you explaining that there are some tasks that become quite difficult. Extreme bodybuilding really is not worth losing some key abilities and it is not worth the medical risks associated with taking steroids.
