Richard Dawkins versus Richard Dawson, sort of (reprise)

York Minster

A different version of this article was originally posted May 19, 2008.

Since then my readership has grown and this article has received many page views.

In the thousands. I thank you Lord.

So, I represent this post with some minor changes.

Thank you.

I have nothing against either gentleman. Richard Dawson is a fine comic actor and host.

This is posted for educational and satirical purposes.

Quotes from:

Dawkins

World of Dawkins

'Religious people split into three main groups when faced with science. I shall label them the "know-nothings", the "know-alls", and the "no-contests".'

There is also room for persons who are educated in both science and religion. It is closed-minded to overlook such a possibility. This would not make someone a 'know-all', or 'no contest', but simply someone with education in both science and religion.

The link is dead now, please see:

TWT

Scientism:

A pejorative term for the concept that only the methods of natural science and related categories form the elements for any philosophical or other enquiry. Blackburn (1996: 344).

Dawkins

"I suspect that today if you asked people to justify their belief in God, the dominant reason would be scientific. Most people, I believe, think that you need a God to explain the existence of the world, and especially the existence of life. They are wrong, but our education system is such that many people don't know it."

Granted there are religious people that are not very educated within religious studies.

There are also non-religious people not very educated within their particular worldview.

One of my complaints on this blog over the years has been the overall lack of philosophical education within the Western education system until University/college.

Christian theism can appeal to first cause philosophical arguments which reason that an immaterial, non-measurable, infinite, eternal, first cause created the laws of science.

Therefore:

This would be mainly/primarily an appeal to philosophy/philosophy of religion and not science.

As well:

Philosophical ontological (and related) arguments are secondary considerations concerning the existence of God within Christian faith.

Philosophical ontological (and related) arguments are for theism and not the neccessarily the Christian God.

Therefore:

Christianity primarily appeals to historical, Biblical revelation for a belief in God.

Richard Dawson: Zero. And then as if that wasn't bad enough, I asked you, name a time when people usually go to bed. You said, of course..."Night." Our survey said...[Ding!]

Richard Dawson: Two!

Dawkins

"...when it comes to choosing from the smorgasbord of available religions, their potential virtues seem to count for nothing, compared to the matter of heredity.

A good point, but then some persons are educated in religious philosophy and faith, and do not simply follow the worldview of parents.

So:

Children often grow up being taught the worldview of parents.

The worldview often goes significantly intellectually unchallenged by the children.

Some parents are religous.

Some parents are non-religious.

Therefore:

The worldview of children who become adults could be religious or non-religious.

Dawson

Dawson blim

"It's all part of life's rich pattern.

Dawkins

Quote

"Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence."

Yes, some religious faith is not warranted. On my blogs this type of faith is challenged again and again.

Those who hold that empiricism and science provide the ultimate answer to all questions do not have all the specific answers on how this takes place.

Therefore:

Faith may be placed in energy/matter as its own cause.

As well:

Religion can be a cop-out, but so can simply following pop science philosophy which can in ignorance and without proper religious education, reject all religion as blind faith.

Anyone that dismisses all religious academia and its philosophical and theological complex workings as pseudo-academic is intellectually ignorant on the issue, and there are plenty of these people on-line.

Dawson

Dawson quotations

“ABC has told me that a sponsor has complained about my making anti-Nixon jokes. I would just like to say that I believe Mr. Nixon did his best to destroy this country.”

Dawkins

"It is often said, mainly by the "no-contests", that although there is no positive evidence for the existence of God, nor is there evidence against his existence. So it is best to keep an open mind and be agnostic. At first sight that seems an unassailable position, at least in the weak sense of Pascal's wager. But on second thoughts it seems a cop-out, because the same could be said of Father Christmas and tooth fairies. There may be fairies at the bottom of the garden. There is no evidence for it, but you can't prove that there aren't any, so shouldn't we be agnostic with respect to fairies?"

There is not historical documentation from many sources over many years from different geographical areas for fairies at the bottom of a garden.

There is Biblical historical documentation of approximately 3500 years of actual persons, from various religions who experienced God. There are scribes, prophets, apostles and of course the resurrected Christ who are actual documented persons.

I conclude:

The documentation would still be actual even if the Scripture contained some falsehoods, meaning a false comparison and false analogy is presented.

Definition of False Analogy:

False Analogy

Dawson

Dawson quotations

“There were people I know that got upset that I kiss people. I kiss them for luck and love, that's all. That's what my mother did to me.”

Thanks Philip from L.A., for the image below.

The original email message suggested these people were Obama supporters, but for the purposes of this blog let us just state that these people are very poor philosophers.

My more specific suggestions are:

These people are under the control of aliens and are being sacrificed for the cause.

These people are hellbound and going to a plain literal hell on earth. Yes, some fundamentalists hold to that type of view on hell.

These people are cultists giving it all for the cause.

Have some suggestions who these people are and what is happening? Please leave a comment.

Interesting how they jump in, rather than walk in and fall like mindless Zombies. No offense Zombie.

The final animation is Benny Hinn at 'work'.

Russ,

I've never had a problem with science nor felt somehow there was any real conflict between the Bible and science where science truly follows the scientific method. But I have never felt science was infallible and over my life I find science changes its mind quite frequently about what it believes. In the end, all belief is a matter of faith.

One problem with some people who claim science over God is the totally leave God out of the equation and so they can really never arrive at the correct answer.

Russ,

'I've never had a problem with science nor felt somehow there was any real conflict between the Bible and science where science truly follows the scientific method.'

Agreed.

There are empirical scientific truths.

There is scientific speculative philosophy (example: humans beings evolved from apes).

These are not within the same category of knowledge.

'But I have never felt science was infallible and over my life I find science changes its mind quite frequently about what it believes. In the end, all belief is a matter of faith.'

Only God has infinite knowledge.

Human beings have finite knowledge.

Human beings do not understand anything exhaustively.

Therefore, human beings have faith in regard to all knowledge.

'One problem with some people who claim science over God is the totally leave God out of the equation and so they can really never arrive at the correct answer.

Larry'

The problem of origins in my mind is actually a larger problem for the non-believer than is the problem of evil.

Thanks very much.

Funnily enough, the wikipedia article for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Dawson>Richard Dawson</a> says at the top, "Not to be confused with Richard Dawkins."

A rather <a href="http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Richard_Dawkins>tongue-in-cheek</a> wikipedia-like article on Dawkins.

Thanks, Chucky, very funny last night.

You listed some good examples of the confusion.

I have this picture in my mind of this 78 year old man, trying to stay out of the public spotlight, retired in Southern California, weekly receiving regular mail and email correspondence from:

a) Christian fundamentalists very annoyed at him.

b) Atheists and critics commending him.

On the bizarre and comical side, I can see a letter from some whacked-out little educated fundamentalist stating that he loved Mr. Dawson on Hogan's Heroes, Match Game, Family Feud, and even the Running Man, but hated him as soon as he gained his Doctorate in Science and started writing and preaching against God.

If I do a google search:

Dawkins "God Delusion"

He did not kiss the female contestants in his second run on Family Feud due to a commitment he made to his wife and daughter.[4] He also has two sons, Mark Dawson (born 1960) and Gary Dawson (born 1962), from his previous marriage to Diana Dors. Richard also has four grandchildren: Lindsay Dors Dawson, Tyler Emm Dawson, Emma Rose Dawson, and Lauren Dawson.'

Apparently this year Holdsworth has been touring with three guys from King Crimson, but it's all really boring, bad-sounding free jazz/noise that goes nowhere. Painful.

satire and theology said...

Yes, like when we saw him in 2003 with Soft Ware (ex Soft Machine). He would push a guitar pedal with his foot and the tone would not noticeably change.

I certainly did not like Remembering Shakti anywhere near as much as my Mahavisgnu Orchestra albums, but John Mclaughlin certainly has more varied tones than Holdsworth, even though with Shakti there were Jazz fusion tones (Jazz, Indian, Classical) and not, except for rare exceptions, Jazz Fusion tones as in Jazz-Rock.

Alex Lifeson with his Progressive Rock/Hard Rock fusion has so many guitar changes during a show, and all those pedals. Many tones.

So, the tonal approach of Holdsworth is why I lost interest years ago in buying any new Holdsworth material, which is sad because he is truly one of the geniuses in general in electric music, and more particular in Jazz Fusion/Jazz-Rock.

By the way with the Holdsworth 2003 trip down to downtown Seattle, a certain good friend left his camera in visible sight in the middle of the driver's car during the concert.

When the two stooges came back to the car, one windshield had been shattered and the camera gone.

The car's legal owner, the driver's Mommy, was rather upset with this forgetful person and told him so.

This friend covered the insurance cost with ICBS.

3. You have more wives than teeth.

4. You wipe your butt with your bare hand, but consider bacon "unclean."

5. You think vests come in two styles: bullet-proof and suicide.

6. You can't think of anyone you haven't declared Jihad against.

7. You consider television dangerous, but routinely carry explosives in your clothing.

8. You were amazed to discover that cell phones have uses other than setting off roadside bombs.

9. You have nothing against women and think every man should own at least four.

10. You've always had a crush on your neighbor's goat.

"Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence."

1. If there is a "lack of evidence," then that would mean there is little or no evidence to evaluate. Therefore, the above quote would seem to be self-contradicting.

2. If the spiritual world is a reality (and it is---according to some, more real than the physical world), then to ignore it is not intelligence, but ignorance.

3. Christian faith is indeed based on evidence. For example, there is textual and documentary evidence for the Bible, archaeological evidence for the Bible, evidence of radically---and even miraculously---changed lives among born-again Christians, medical evidence that defies rational explanation, and "the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1, KJV).

satire and theology said...

'1. If there is a "lack of evidence," then that would mean there is little or no evidence to evaluate. Therefore, the above quote would seem to be self-contradicting.'

Reasonable point.

'2. If the spiritual world is a reality (and it is---according to some, more real than the physical world), then to ignore it is not intelligence, but ignorance.'

As I have mentioned previously on and offline, I can agree with critics that much that is supposedly supernatural is fraudulent.

However:

Even under a deistic set-up, in my mind the next most likely worldview after a Biblical one, God would still have to do one miracle, that is the creation of the natural from the supernatural, in our present reality.

In deistic and Biblical worldviews God creates the natural from the supernatural.

Therefore, if God has the power and will for one supernatural act to take place in connection with the natural one, other supernatural acts are reasonable possibilities.

'3. Christian faith is indeed based on evidence. For example, there is textual and documentary evidence for the Bible, archaeological evidence for the Bible, evidence of radically---and even miraculously---changed lives among born-again Christians, medical evidence that defies rational explanation, and "the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1, KJV).'

As noted, there is Biblical and related support and philosophical reasoning in defence of Christian faith.

Thanks, Jeff.

My blog at times satirizes false and questionable religion, and philosophical views of a non-religious nature.

Be careful (I glanced at your blog) not to simply write-off all religion because some of it is false.

One should not want to write-off all science because some of it is false.

Also:

Religion is an academic discipline.

Religion is a general term for various 'faith related' worldviews.

Christianity is its own religion.

Therefore,

Biblical Christianity should be evaluated as a largely independent worldview.

I wonder if Stephen Hawking has been reading Richard Dawkins?

satire and theology said...

'Far from being a once-in-a-million event that could only be accounted for by extraordinary serendipity or a divine hand, the Big Bang was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, Hawking says.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist," he writes.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going," he finds.'

I am not a scientist, but I do not reason that a finite material universal can create itself.

It comes from something infinite and immaterial.

Interesting television and good guests.

Thanks.
